Like all businesses nowadays, we are driven by data. In the course of our work, we gather and collate data through our own primary research, and also from a large number of public sources, and feed it back through our events and publications.

Research programme members also supply us with certain types of data to feed our benchmarking and modelling activities; these are subject to strict confidentiality and anti-trust policies and are never shared with any third parties.

We have developed Data Services as a means of giving members and other clients direct access to rich datasets, where they can run queries and extract the resulting data in a variety of formats for their own use.

ICDP’s aftermarket model: a key tool in planning around uncertainty - new product july 2023

With a large installed base of circulating cars, and an average age of just under 12 years, the European aftermarket has traditionally been slow to change, with stakeholders able to plan on the basis of stable revenues and workflows. However, the extent of the trends now underway – electrification and connectivity chief among them – is such that the whole market will be affected in ways and at speeds that have not been seen before. Structural (technology change, ageing parc, lower distances driven, technician skills shortage, etc.) and conjunctural factors (energy costs, inflation, parts shortages, etc.) are combining to create a ‘perfect storm’ in the aftermarket, where previous assumptions can no longer be relied upon, but the future evolution remains uncertain.

In-depth modelling of the future size and shape of aftermarket demand, how it will divide between different types of stakeholder, and how sensitive it will be to individual trends and scenarios, has been a core element in ICDP’s research programme over many years, and many members and clients have drawn on it to inform their own aftermarket strategy. Against this backdrop of accelerating change, we have now redesigned our model to make it more flexible, and more user-friendly.

  • Flexible definition of products, repairs, and channels

  • Covers up to a 10-year outlook

  • Available to be supported by us, or for you to run yourself

  • Ideal for scenario-based planning

ICDP’s aftermarket model offers stakeholders a wide range of benefits. Please download the flyer below to find out more details.

Top 300 European Dealer Groups

(Published May 2024)

Please also see Executive Briefing 03/24 HERE

At all levels, dealer groups continue to grow in scale, either organically as they take on new brands and expand into new geographies, or through merger and acquisition (M&A) as family investors look to exit at the same time as other investors continue to seek new growth opportunities.  As a result, dealer organisations have become more complex with new management models required to monitor and steer businesses that are increasingly beyond the traditional owner-operator approach of ‘managing by walking about’.  The diversity of brands and geographies that many groups now encompass requires brand or regional structures that ensure each franchise remains focused on the needs of their customers and partners, whilst also capitalising on the scale benefits of the group.  Although a long tail of smaller owner operators with one or a few sites will remain long into the future, it is the larger groups that are most attractive to manufacturers looking to expand their representation and vendors who want to sell their products and services into the sector.

This is the backdrop for an update of ICDP’s ‘Top 300 European Dealer Groups’ analysis.  Given the different reporting requirements and levels of disclosure across markets and groups, we do not claim that this a definitive list of the top 300 dealer groups, particularly at the lower end where differences are small, but it is certainly a representative list of 300 of the largest players.  The analysis is based on 2022 data, or the financial year closest to that, which is the latest available on a consistent basis across all businesses.  We have taken account of post-2022 acquisitions in terms of reporting ownership, as we feel this is a more meaningful reference point for planning today.  They range in annual turnover from less than €0.25 billion to €15 billion, with a combined turnover of almost €270 billion – similar to the entire VW Group over the same period.  Together, they operate over 28% of all the franchise points in Europe and sell a third of the new cars.  The vast majority are privately owned businesses, often still managed by the founders or descendants of the founders, whose name may still be found on the front of every dealership.

European Car Distribution Handbook 2024

The comprehensive guide to manufacturer-franchised new car sales and aftersales networks in Europe

The latest edition of the European Car Distribution Handbook (ECDH), showcasing the size and shape of European dealer networks as at the 1st January 2024, is now available.  The handbook provides a unique resource for network planners, anyone looking to compare the relative performance of brands and markets, or those looking to understand the potential of dealers as a target market.  The 2024 edition of the handbook has undergone substantial changes from previous editions, adding 10 new brands for a total of 50 brands now across 35 markets.  At the same time as expanding the brand portfolio, the structure of the report itself has changed – whilst the traditional information of the number and type of dealer by brand and market is contained within the report, how it is presented is now clearer, and additional trend information has been included to give a better understanding of developments.

ECDH is available as a PDF document and separately priced as a Microsoft Excel file.

If you wish to purchase a copy of the European Car Distribution Handbook 2024, please contact projectoffice@icdp.net

We held a webinar on 10th December to introduce the 2024 handbook, the presentation with speaking notes is available below together with the video recording.
