January 2022 Aftermarket Projection Model Update Webinar

Whilst aftersales has been quite a traditional market up to now, stakeholders expect it to be badly shaken by changing trends over the next decade.

Without being exhaustive, we can quote the combined effect of new car sales losses due to Covid-19 and chip shortages which might affect the car parc volume and lead to more increases in the average age. In parallel, some potential changes in future car usage patterns related to commuting distances are in decline because of teleworking generalisation, environmental regulations, traffic bans and take-up of mobility schemes and these might lead to a further decrease in the average distance driven by motorists. Last but not least, because of their technology, it is recognised that electric vehicles need less service and repairs than their ICE counterparts. Their expected uptake will inevitably affect the overall number of repair and maintenance jobs being handled by workshops.

The first part of this webinar on aftersales set the scene and will provide a status of the aftermarket in 5 EU markets (Belgium, France, Germany, Italy and the UK), for the mechanical maintenance and repair sector as well as for the body repair activity. In particular, we looked at the evolution of the shape and size in volume and value of the repair & maintenance segment over the recent past also taking into account the impact of lockdowns on workshop business over last year.

The second part of the webinar turned to the future. Based on the outputs of our modelling, we presented our views on how the car aftermarket volume and value may evolve over the next decade in the EU5 in the face of the behavioural and technology changes described above.

The presentation with speaking notes can be downloaded below plus a live video recording can be viewed.
